Safety and Security

Tips for Protecting Yourself and Your Valuables

When it comes to your protecting yourself and your valuables, it’s important to take some precautions. For example:

  • Avoid walking alone when it’s dark. Stay to well-lit areas.
  • Park your car in a designated area, lock it and make sure your valuables are out of sight.
  • Report any suspicious individuals or incidents to the campus safety and security office.

Living Off-Campus

If you’re living off-campus, remember to lock your doors and windows. Only keep small amounts of money on you or in your room.  Keep track of your keys, don’t leave valuables unattended and protect your bank and credit cards.

Living in the Residence Hall

In addition, keep in mind that cell phones, laptop computers, I-Pods and game systems are among the most commonly stolen items, so LOCK THEM UP. (Locks can be purchased at the bookstore.)  You also may want to fill out the sample inventory form that follows below and store it in a safe place.

  • Report stolen items and lost key cards IMMEDIATELY (contact the safety and security office from 4 pm – 8 am and the residence hall director from 8 am – 4 pm).
  • Never leave your dorm door ajar, even to use the bathroom or to go to the next room. Always remember to double check your door when leaving the room.
  • Never give someone else your key card. Don’t let anyone in or prop open any doors.
  • Never sign a visitor in that you don’t know or will not be with, because you will be held responsible for him/her and his/her actions while in the building.
