
LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY (January 24, 2011) – On Saturday, February 12 at 1:00 pm, SUNY Sullivan will present an HD simulcast of John Adams and Alice Goodman’s opera, Nixon In China, as it is performed live at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York’s Lincoln Center. The broadcast – part of the college’s Metropolitan Opera: Live In HD Series – is open to the public, and will be shown in the school’s Seelig Theater. Tickets are $20.00 each for general admission, and $10.00 each for students.
SUNY Sullivan is proud to take part in this Peabody and Emmy Award winning series. With state of the art audio and visual capabilities, the Seelig Theater is an ideal venue to see and hear these performances come alive. Light refreshments will be available during intermissions in the adjacent DeHoyos Gallery.
Nixon In China is Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams’s most famous opera. The groundbreaking 1987 work is making its Met debut. It is an exploration of the human truths beyond the headlines surrounding President Nixon’s historic 1972 encounter with Mao and Communist China. Baritone James Maddalena stars as Nixon. Peter Sellars, also making his Met debut, directs.
“All of my operas have dealt on deep psychological levels with our American mythology,” says Mr. Adams. “The meeting of Nixon and Mao is a mythological moment in world history, particularly American history.”
The sixth simulcast in the series, Nixon In China marks the halfway point of the 2010-2011 season. It will be followed by presentations of popular opera’s by such luminaries as Rossini, Strauss, Verdi, and Wagner among others.
