LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY (March 30, 2011) – On Saturday, April 9 at 1:00 pm, SUNY Sullivan will present an HD simulcast of Rossini’s, Le Comte Ory, as it is performed live at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York’s Lincoln Center. The broadcast – part of the college’s Metropolitan Opera: Live In HD Series – is open to the public, and will be shown in the school’s Seelig Theater. Tickets are $20.00 each for general admission, and $10.00 each for students.
SUNY Sullivan is proud to take part in this Peabody and Emmy Award winning series. With state of the art audio and visual capabilities, the Seelig Theater is an ideal venue to see and hear these performances come alive. Light refreshments will be available during intermissions in the adjacent DeHoyos Gallery.
In Rossini’s masterpiece – first performed in 1828 – Count Ory vies for the love of the lonely Countess Adèle with his own page, Isolier. Affairs of the heart, the Crusades, deception, mistaken identities, men dressed as nuns, and a raid on the castle’s wine cellar are all part of the hilarity that ensues during this vocally dazzling comedy.
Juan Diego Flórez is Count Ory in this Met premier production, and Joyce DiDonato sings the role of Isolier. Countess Adèle is sung by soprano Diana Damrau. Bartlett Sher directs.
Mr. Sher describes opera as, “a place where love is dangerous. People get hurt. That can be very funny and very painful. Rossini captures both—with the most beautiful love music Rossini ever wrote.”
The ninth of twelve simulcasts in the 2010-2011 series, Le Comte Ory is the first presentation of the spring. It will be followed by Strauss’s Capriccio and Verdi’s Il Trovatore in April, and the series finale – Wagner’s Die Walkure – in May.
Please also plan to attend the pre-screening discussion with opera experts, which will take place between Noon and 1:00 pm. Visitors are encouraged to arrive at the DeHoyos Gallery early to take part in this portion of the program meant to enhance the overall viewing experience.
