SUNY Sullivan Offers Human Services & Direct Support Training

Partners with Center for Discovery, Sullivan ARC, New Hope Community, and Crystal Run Village.

LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y. (April 20, 2011) – SUNY Sullivan’s department of Workforce Development is offering a class designed to prepare individuals to work in one of the fastest growing occupations in the region – Human Services and Direct Support. The six-week course will meet once weekly beginning in May, and is offered in conjunction with the Center for Discovery, Sullivan ARC, New Hope Community, and Crystal Run Village.

Graduates of the Human Services & Direct Support training course will have the knowledge and skills that local agencies are looking for when hiring entry-level employees. SUNY Sullivan has partnered with some of the county’s largest employers, each of which consistently has job opportunities available. Instructors will be two local experts in the field: Amanda Ward (Staff Training Coordinator for Workforce Development, Center for Discovery), and Tasha Butler (Staff Development Coordinator, Sullivan ARC).

The six week training course presents a basic understanding of human services and the role of Direct Support Professionals. Upon completion, participants will be able to identify their strengths and apply them to the direct care field. They will be familiar with professional ethics in the workplace and able to differentiate personal ethics from professional ethics. They will have developed basic communication skills and the ability to apply them as an effective team member. They will also know how to prepare for job interviews in the direct care field.

The class will meet on Thursday evenings from 6 pm until 8 pm beginning on May 12 and continuing through June 16. The class will meet at SUNY Sullivan in Room F120. A course fee of $350.00 is due at registration. Eligible participants may qualify for funding for this training through Sullivan Works.
