
Loch Sheldrake, NY (May 23, 2011) – Announcing the Summer of Fun at SUNY Sullivan and the Seelig Theatre – your destination for family-friendly performances right here in Sullivan County all season long. Beginning in June with the Metropolitam Opera in HD “Encore” Series, and continuing into August, this year’s selection of events at SUNY Sullivan offers something for everyone, from kids theater to dance, Celtic rock to swinging jazz!
It all kicks off in June, with encore presentations from the Metropolitan Opera in HD Series. The following operas will be presented as part of this summer’s schedule. All performances are on Wednesdays at 6:30 pm: MADAMA BUTTERFLY (6/15), DON PASQUALE (6/22), SIMON BOCCANEGRA (6/ 29), LA FILLE DU REGIMENT (7/13).
Beginning in July, the Seelig Theatre stage comes alive with performances ranging from the theatrical to the musical. On THURSDAY, JULY 14 at 8:00 PM, the ALPHA OMEGA THEATRICAL DANCE COMPANY brings its show to campus for an evening of dance described as energetic and uplifting. You won’t want to miss this modern dance performance that draws from a rich background in many different styles and influences. Inspired by everything from urban life to tribal influence, the Alpha Omega Company’s dances range from abstract to dramatic. See for yourself how the Alpha Omega Dance Company has wowed audiences coast to coast and into Europe!
On THURSDAY, JULY 21ST at 8:00 PM, the METROPOLITAN HOT CLUB performs the great swing music of the 30’s and 40’s made popular by legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt and jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli. Still a beloved art form today, what is known as “gypsy jazz” is played by some of the most skilled string musicians the world over. Metropolitan Hot Club is the Hudson Valley’s premier gypsy jazz group! With an impressive repertoire of swing classics along with newer favorites, and their own original compositions, the Metropolitan Hot Club performs unforgettable concerts that will have you tapping your toes and smiling all night!
THURSDAY, JULY 28 at 8:00 PM, come out for FINN’S FURY – a New York Celtic rock group combining blues, punk, and lyrical vocals to create what they call "Urban Celtic Fusion Rock.” The band cranks out instrumental jams that come at you with a raw edge of unpredictability that has become their trademark. Finn’s Fury has brought its high energy brand of foot-stomping Irish rock to audiences all over, and now they’re coming to Sullivan County along with their brigade of pipers and step dancers!
Got kids? Bring them to one of two stagings of the wonderful show, HONK, JR.! on FRIDAY, JULY 22 (8:00 PM) or the matinee on SATURDAY, JULY 23 (2:00 PM). The whole family will love this re-imagining of Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless tale, The Ugly Duckling. The musical adaptation – performed by the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop – delivers a message of tolerance through wonderful songs, sets and inventive costumes. Enter a world where animals sing and dance – the countryside where the duckling, named Ugly, lives.
On THURSDAY, AUGUST 4 at 8:00 PM, THE STREET BEATS GROUP takes the stage at SUNY Sullivan and turns the whole auditorium into one giant percussion instrument! If you’ve ever hit the pots and pans with a wooden spoon, this is the show for you! Imagine music made on orange construction cones! Five gallon buckets! Computer keyboards, Tic Tac Boxes and medicine bottles! Straight out of New York City, Street Beats brings the excitement and energy of shows like "Bring In Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk,” "Stomp," “Blast,” and "Blue Man Group,” with their own original, high-energy music and choreography. For sure, Street Beats put on a show of sights and sounds you and your family won’t soon forget!
For jaw-dropping aerial acrobatics, get to the theater on THURSDAY, AUGUST 11 at 7:00 PM for THE ACROBATS OF CIRQUE-TACULAR. The grand show brings the best of entertainment from across genres to one stage for a singular awe-inspiring, breath-taking display. Bigger, better, and bolder than ever before, “Cirque-tacular: The Show” brings elite artists, skilled designers, and brilliant technicians together for pageantry, spectacle and skill that is truly the Acrobats of Cirque-tacular!
The season wraps up on THURSDAY, AUGUST 25 at 7:00 PM with an evening of RAG, BLUES & ALL THAT JAZZ WITH PETER MUIR. A masterful piano player, Muir specializes in taking the roots of ragtime, blues and early jazz, and performing them in a totally original and compelling style. His performance schedule takes him from festivals and concerts in the United States to Europe, Australia, and Hong Kong. Peter brings his inimitable style to the Seelig Theatre for an intimate evening of his favorite types of piano music – rag time, blues and, of course, all that jazz!
All live stage performances and opera broadcasts will be presented on the campus of SUNY Sullivan, in the state-of-the-art, air conditioned Seelig Theatre. Ticket prices for The Met Live in HD series are $20 ($10 for students). All other performances, EXCLUDING Honk Jr., are $20 for adults, and $12 for children under 13. For the Honk Jr. performance, tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 13.
