Loch Sheldrake, NY (June 27, 2014): SUNY Sullivan alum (’12) Cleanthony Early was drafted Thursday night into the NBA by the New York Knicks. Early was the Knicks first pick of the draft, which took place in the second round. The draft was held at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn and aired live on ESPN.
SUNY Sullivan President Karin Hilgersom expressed her pleasure at Early’s selection. “I am so proud of Cleanthony,” she said. “He is a prime example of the success that our student athletes achieve. From SUNY Sullivan he went on to Wichita State, where he thrived, and I believe he’ll be a significant player for the Knicks.”
SUNY Sullivan athletic director Chris Depew said, “The entire athletic department at SUNY Sullivan is celebrating Cleanthony’s pick by the New York Knicks. We knew from the beginning that Cle was a stand-out player, and he proved that both while he was at Sullivan and for the Shockers.” Depew added, “The fact that he will be playing in the New York area is an added bonus for everyone.”
Early is SUNY Sullivan’s all time leading scorer, having scored 1,452 points in his two-year basketball career with the Generals. At Sullivan he was twice named the National Junior College Athletics Association Division III Player of the Year and was named the National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year. He attended Wichita State on a full athletic scholarship.
